Matra-Simca responded by introducing the Bagheera S in mid-1975, with a 1442cc four-pot engine rated at 88bhp and 90lb ft of torque. Borrowed from the Chrysler Alpine, this engine offered more low-down torque, while the top speed was boosted to a claimed 115mph.

Last week we told you all about the Matra-Simca Bagheera; this week it's the turn of that car's successor, the Murena, which was the last new Matra to be developed, although the Rancho would outlive it by a year.. Bagheera are powered by either 1200-cc 84-hp or 1400-cc 90-hp transverse-mounted, carbureted, inline-four engines, both of which were existing Simca units. The only transmission available was a Simca 4-speed unit from their sedans. Body panels were hefty fiberglass, over a pressed-steel unibody-style frame.

The official unveiling of the Bagheera took place at the 1973 Le Mans 24-hour, and to mark the occasion, Matra ensured that a pre-launch consignment of 500 yellow Bagheeras were readily available at SIMCA dealers across France. The launch couldn't have been timed better: A Matra 670B took the victor's spoils at the famous endurance event.

Oldtimer Simca Matra Bagheera
A large-diameter crossmember at the rear cradled the 1,294-cc Simca "Poissy" engine, which produced 84 hp in the Bagheera. A four-speed transmission was the only choice offered. Later, Matra offered a larger, 90-hp 1,442-cc version of the Simca engine on the Bagheera S.

But the Bagheera was a solid French reality ready to be unveiled in April 1973 in Annecy. Its debut has been followed by the launch of a first block of 500 yellow units, coinciding - randomly, but with extraordinary timing - with the victory of the Matra 670B at the 24h of Le Mans of the same year.

In 1969, Matra was taken over by SIMCA, which in turn became fully Chrysler-owned one year later. Matra continued with their mission to produce an inexpensive, economical sports car, using off-the-shelf power units and running gear coupled with dramatic styling. In 1973, Matra introduced their newest concept, the M550—better known as the Bagheera and named. Matra Simca Bagheera S Coupè.
